Wildlife Biologist Has Late Night Visitation at Remote Camp From Large Hairy Bipedal Creature

Report Details

Occurrence date: August/1979
Location: County, OR
Nearby/Vicinity: Baker, Oregon.
Time / Conditions: 03:00 — This happened at night around 3 am. The sky was clear and I could see the creature.
# of Witnesses: 2

Witness Account:
I was working as a wildlife biologist in eastern Oregon in August of 1979. I was married and went camping with my husband on top of Mount Baker, the biggest mountain in Eastern Oregon. It was pure wilderness on top of this mountain, as the only other people who went up there were 2 hunters. We pitched a tent, but never slept in it because we were afraid of what wildlife might be there. We had a small stationwagon and decided to sleep in it in case we had an encounter with a bear. In the middle of the night we had a very big creature that came out of the woods and walked in circles on 2 feet around our car for at least 15 minutes or longer. It walked on 2 feet and it sounded like it had a peg-leg like Captain Hook. This creature was big, about 6 feet tall with black hair. It was curious about the car and it kept walking in circles around the car. It would stop walking when I shown a lantern light on it. Then it started walking again when the light was off. This encounter lasted at least 15-20 minutes. Then the creature lost interest and wandered away into the forest. The biggest mistake that we had made was not building and keeping a campfire going. After this creature left, we quickly made a campfire. When morning came the next day, I went to work and my boss wanted me to go back up this mountain where I had encountered the creature to do a bird study. I told him that I would go, but he had to come with me and we carried two 12-gage shotguns. We went back up the mountain to the area where I had encountered the creature. We looked for the creature or it's tracks, but never found it. The wildlife people were studying Bigfoot in Washington and Oregon states. This creature is real and is considered an endangered species.

Hand/foot prints:
The grass in this wilderness area was 2-3 feet tall and no footprints were found.

Sounds:
I heard this creature walking on 2 feet and it sounded like it had a club-foot or oeg-leg.

Additional observations:
The only sound that I heard was it walking on 2 feet. The first step was lighter than the second step.

Witness Background

Carol Scott is a trained naturalist and wildlife biologist who graduated from Ohio State University with a degree in wildlife management. This witness presented as highly credible and expressed a deep knowledge of wildlife study and management methodology.

Immediately following graduation in 1979, Scott's first job offer was in Oregon with the wildlife management office. She recalled to me a notable exchange with a secretary on her first day, who asked her whether she believed in Bigfoot and suggested that such a belief might be relevant in that job role. At the time, Scott did not fully understand the remark, but later came to believe it reflected a broader awareness among wildlife professionals in Oregon and Washington. She further stated that it was widely known that the species was being studied by wildlife management staff in those areas.

Incident (Classification: 1D)

In August of 1979, Scott and her husband traveled to a remote area near Mount Baker, outside of Baker, Oregon. The location was described as extremely isolated, accessible only by a narrow, single-lane, two-track road, with very limited human presence. According to Scott, only two hunters were known to visit the area and only rarely. She said she chose this area because she wanted to impress her husband, who also graduated from Ohio State with a degree in wildlife management.

The couple intended to camp overnight and although they set up a tent, they ultimately chose not to use it due to concerns about potential wildlife encounters, particularly with bears. Instead, they slept inside a small Vega station wagon with the rear seats folded down. Their food was stored separately in a suspended bag hung at a distance from the vehicle, which was parked in the single lane road at the top of the mountain, surrounded by tall grass about 3 feet high. No campfire was maintained overnight, which she stated that was "probably our biggest mistake."

At approximately 3:00 a.m., Scott was awakened by the sound of movement just outside the vehicle. She immediately recognized the sound as bipedal footsteps. The movement was distinctive. Each step was heavy and deliberate, but uneven—one footfall consistently louder and heavier than the other. She described the pattern as resembling a “peg-leg” or “club-foot,” with a repeating light–heavy cadence. The sound circled the vehicle.

As Scott became fully alert, she realized the movement was continuous and controlled. The animal walked around the car repeatedly, maintaining a steady pace only a few feet away. The circling behavior continued for approximately 15 to 20 minutes.

Her husband was also awakened. When she suggested he look outside, he was so frightened he refused. She noted that his heart was beating so forcefully she could audibly hear it inside the vehicle.

Description

Although visibility was limited from inside the vehicle, the night was very clear and the animal remained in close proximity to the vehicle throughout the encounter. Scott was able to observe the figure intermittently. She described the large, upright form as

approximately 6 feet tall or taller

very broad and heavily built

dark or black in coloration and

having a visible head, but no clearly defined neck.

Behavior

The animal's behavior appeared deliberate and responsive. Each time Scott used the lantern inside the vehicle in an attempt to illuminate the surroundings, the movement outside stopped. When the light was turned off, the circling resumed. This pattern was repeated multiple times, suggesting the animal was aware of the light and actively modifying its behavior in response to it, and possibly understood that the occupants inside the vehicle were unable to actually see the animal. (The lantern made the inside of the vehicle brighter than any light being cast outside.)

Despite the presence of a food bag hung nearby, the animal did not approach or disturb it. Its attention appeared focused entirely on the vehicle and its occupants.

After approximately 15–20 minutes, the circling ceased. The animal moved away from the vehicle and disappeared back into the surrounding forest.

Post-encounter

Following its departure, Scott and her husband immediately built and maintained a campfire for the remainder of the night. Due to the very rugged nature of the road, they determined it would not be safe to navigate the road out in the dark.

The following morning, Scott returned to work. She was instructed to return to the same location to conduct a bird study. Scott agreed, but only on the condition that her supervisor accompany her. Both individuals returned to the site carrying 12-gauge shotguns as a precaution. They searched the area for tracks or evidence but found none. The dense, tall grass likely obscured any ground impressions.

Scott reiterated that, at the time, wildlife professionals in Oregon and Washington were actively studying Bigfoot as a real biological entity. She maintains that the animal she encountered was real and has expressed the belief that such a species could be considered endangered. She has stated to others who doubt her encounter, "come up that mountain with me for one night and you'll see they're real." Scott said the animals were there in the late 70s and 80s and she believes them to still be in that same area today, due to its remote location.

During the follow-up interview, Scott shared that she has rarely told others about this experience because when she has spoken about it in the past, the encounter was often dismissed. She also expressed a sense of relief in being able to discuss the event with an organization that approaches the subject from a scientific perspective. Her conviction remains strong. She described her experience not as ambiguous or uncertain, but as a clear and direct encounter with a large, bipedal animal. Of this event that occurred nearly 47 years ago, Scott said, "I remember it as clearly as it if was last night, and I'll never forget it."
