Hog Hunters Have Strange Encounter

Report Details

Occurrence date: September/2018
Location: County, TX
Nearby/Vicinity: Charlotte
Time / Conditions: 15:00 — Dense fog I believe they were using to get close to the hogs
# of Witnesses: 3

Witness Account:
We were hog hunting in Charlotte Texas, dense fog had 3 dogs all took off but one came back so we waited but no barks or dogs ever prevailed, so we eased on to come across a black figure which turned out to be a hog that ran away when I flipped on my light, so we followed with the remaining dog until we came to a fence and we could hear what sounded like whoops straight ahead of us, then to the right we heard the same whoop but different toned, and the dog would not leave our side, then what sounded like something easing thru the thick brush on two legs started from down the fence line u could tell this thing had hands and was moving brush to keep it's self from breaking branches, I told the 2 guys I was with to crouch down along a turkey pear bush and be quiet, the sound stopped directly in front of us and I had a 30-30 lever action rifle ready for anything and that's when from the direction this thing came from we heard what sounded ape like chatter and scream so I raised the gun and fired straight in front of me where the thing had stopped walking and we high tailed out of there, constantly scanning the tree line with a light while we waited for our friend to pick us up.

Sounds:
We heard what sounded like monkey chatter with a big scream, I've hunted in south central texas my whole life and have never heard anything like it

Investigator's Observations

Investigator(s): Hector Talamantez

Case# 24082001

Investigator Comments: On April 10, 2025, this investigation was conducted via telephone by Hector Talamantez Jr. This incident was initially submitted on August 20, 2024, by the witness. The witness stated this event occurred on the early morning of Saturday, September 22, 2018, while hunting for hogs. The witness explained the property is in Atascosa County, Texas and located near the city of Charlotte. The details recalled by the witness were very similar and almost identical to the report he submitted. After the witness’s recollection of the events, I followed through with a battery of questions about the incident to cover more details.

The witness stated that this incident occurred at nighttime between 0300-0400hrs during a night hunt (and not 1500hrs as mistakenly indicated on the report). The location is privately owned and with the permission from the landowner to hunt on the land, he was driven to a peanut field where hogs were known to be frequent. The witness stated he was accompanied by two other men to hunt with him, one of whom was his friend. The witness described the weather conditions as heavily fogged with an adequate amount of moon light (but pitch black in the thick brush) and very muddy due to recent heavy rains.

The breed of dogs that the witness had with him that night were a mix of Pit Bull and Catahoula, that he used several times before to assist with tracking and catching hogs. After spotting a hog in a nearby tree line, the witness ‘hissed’ his three dogs after it but they refused to go into the brush where it ran. Instead, one of the dogs immediately returned to the witness while the other two ran away (they ran back to the truck where the landowner originally dropped them off).

The witness and other two hunters decided to track the hog they just saw into the tree line, by following a trail of disturbed dew. This led them onto a dirt road which ran adjacent to a nearby fence line. At that time, they heard several hogs nearby that were making sounds that the witness described as ‘fighting over feed’. The witness described his one dog that ran back to him earlier as frightened and to the point he was refusing to go after the hogs when prompted to do so.

While facing South, the witness heard very loud whooping sounds coming from the other side where the group of hogs were heard. The witness described the whooping sound similar to a barking dog, but much deeper and louder. At the same time, the witness heard a similar, but even ‘deeper’ series of whooping sounds to his right (West). These whooping sounds were approximately 100-150 yards away from either direction.

The witness heard footsteps walking towards him from the same area (South) where he heard the first whooping sounds. He described the footsteps were moving very slowly and deliberately as if it was 'creeping'. The witness heard the footsteps moving one at a time, versus a cow (or other similar animal walking on all fours) in which case, it would be crashing through heavy brush. This led the witness to believe the footsteps were made by something large and bipedal through the mud. The noises were ultimately described as something moving methodically as if it was negotiating through the brush by pushing branches with its hands from approximately 25-30 yards away towards all three hunters.

While trying to determine what was walking towards him, the witness said he heard sounds that he compared to ‘monkeys screaming at the zoo’ but much louder and forceful. These screams were coming from the general direction as the first series of whooping sounds. At this point, all the sounds just described were occurring at the same time leading the witness to believe there were approximately 3-4 (or more) wood apes present and hunting the same hogs they were trying to locate. This is when the witness fired a single shot with his rifle towards the direction of the footsteps and all three hunters retreated back to the landowner’s vehicle. The landowner heard the same noises as the witness and told him (the witness) that the sounds they heard were probably monkeys that had escaped from somewhere nearby.

The witness stated that at no time did he (or those with him) observe anything that caused the source of whoops, howls, or footsteps. Throughout the phone interview, the witness was very clear and concise with his recollection of what occurred. The witness sounded ‘relieved’ when sharing details about what occurred, and his demeanor was further consistent regarding his enthusiasm and intrigue. This witness is thus someone who I believe to be credible.
