Bowhunter Has Unsettling Experience

Report Details

Occurrence date: October/2005
Location: Hill County, TX
Nearby/Vicinity: Whitney/Blum
Time / Conditions: 06:00 — The sun had just set and I was trying to make it back to my vehicle before it got completely dark. No such luck that evening.
# of Witnesses: 1

Witness Account:
I had been bowhunting on US Army Corps land one day legally. This was on a Wednesday and the sun had just set. I hurried down out of the portable tree stand that was fastened to a tree. Got it all lowered down by rope and then removed the climbing sticks and straps. Finished strapping it all to my back and began walking out down the firebreak trail. The location isn't far from the Nolan River. It was getting dark fast and decided to call family on my cell phone to let them know I was ok and was headed back to my pickup.

It was a lengthy walk back and knew it would be completely dark before reaching my vehicle which was parked back near the County Road. While on the phone speaking to my family member, a loud, spine-tingling scream erupted immediately to my left. The scream came from a south direction across the fence on the Steiner Valley Ranch. I could easily tell exactly where the scream came from under a Live Oak tree but the sun had already set and it was too dark under that tree to see anything. I could feel whatever staring right at me. It is my opinion that it wanted me to leave and not return.

My family member, whom I was speaking to on the phone at the time of the scream, was unable to hear anything as it was a cheap flip phone. I kept looking behind on the trail to see if anything stepped out as I walked further away from that location. The scream was very loud and unlike anything I had ever heard before. I had grown up hunting and fishing in two states and was well experienced with animal and insect sounds. This kind of scream was not human nor from a mountain lion either. It was for sure an odd and nerve rattling experience. Never found any tracks upon later visits. The area has dense brush and large trees not far from the lake.

Sounds:
Loud, high pitched scream unlike anything I ever heard before. It was focused and directed right at me from less than a hundred yards from under a Liveoak tree.
