Witness Account:
I and two friends went camping in the Davy Crockett National Forest on April 19. We camped up in the Neches camping area, its about 7 miles SW from Alto. Arriving around 8:30 AM we set up camp. We had the area totally to ourselves, being it was Thursday and it had been raining a few days before. We set up camp and about 3:00 myself and one of my friends wanted to hike down to the big slough, a creek that feeds into the Neches river. We wanted to try out a new water filter. The trail was the logging road and it was about 2 and half miles to the tee in the trail. We hit the tee and we traversed to our right along the powerline trail for about 2 miles up past a beaver pond. We collected water and being we saw a few snakes we started to head back. We reached the tee turned to the left and headed back up hill. It was quiet, just a perfect spring day. About quater of a mile up the trail we clearly heard a single clear whoop. It was to the left and rear of us, maybe 100 yards. My friend who was with me was on the trail ahead me, about three feet ahead and when we heard the whoop he turned around slowly and looked at me. I motioned to him not make a sound and for us to remain still and quiet. We quietly waited for about 2 minutes and then there was a 2nd whoop, this one was about 200 yards away, ahead of us. The two whoops were different, but had a clean sound to them, not like a person, real smooth. I knew we were back there by ourselves, there were no foot or vehicle tracks leading into this area due to the rain. We remained in the area for another five minutes and heard nothing and we returned to camp. The rest of the trip we did not hear or see anything else.
Sounds:
Two whoops, smooth and clean sounding. First one was stronger or closer. The 2nd was lighter or further away. The area was lightly forested, somewhat brushy. No other sounds.
