- Class 2
- Class 2, Competency: Reports involving sightings by professionally trained or highly skilled observers.2 Investigator determines that a visual encounter with a sasquatch/bigfoot is a distinct possibility, the observer is exceptionally trustworthy, professionally trained, and experienced in the outdoors and/or is accustomed to looking for and recording details (e.g., biologist, anthropologist/archaeologist, ranger, trapper/tracker/seasoned hunter, bird watcher, game warden, naturalist, law enforcement), and other explanations can be reasonably excluded.
- Class 3a
- Class 3, Credibility: Sightings or possible wood ape evidence reported by credible witnesses.3a Investigator determines that a visual encounter with a sasquatch/bigfoot is a distinct possibility, the observer is credible, and all other sources can be reasonably ruled out.
- Class 3b
- Class 3, Credibility: Sightings or possible wood ape evidence reported by credible witnesses.3b Unidentifiable vocalizations were reported and there is accompanying tangible evidence to possibly indicate the presence of a sasquatch/bigfoot, the observer is very reliable, and other sources can be reasonably ruled out.
- Class 3c
- Class 3, Credibility: Sightings or possible wood ape evidence reported by credible witnesses.3c No visual encounter occurred, but physical evidence was found to indicate the presence of a sasquatch/bigfoot (tracks, hair, scat, etc.), the observer is very reliable, and other sources can be reasonably ruled out.

Witness Account:
We have had 3 occurrences over a two-year period. Not sure about months and days, and i had attributed the first two events to hogs. Our Property is heavily wooded. In 2021, My father was sitting at our camp, and heard something bipedal walking through the water/marsh in front of our camp one night. Several months later, I was paced out along our road toward our gate and could see small trees being bent down as it walked next to me and could hear the extra step. This occurred probably about 11 o’clock at night. I never heard any breathing or saw any eyes. But shortly there after my neighbors motion, light went off at his gate. He told me he never saw anything on his cameras that night. the Third event occurred one night when I was hog hunting back in the woods late at night and something right behind me let out the loudest roar I’ve ever heard. So loud I could feel it. It roared twice. I was frozen but had to come out of my blind eventually. I had to walk back toward the direction from where the Rohr came to get on my four wheeler. Again, I never saw any eyes or heard anything else. Our property is just north east of Hardin. All of this happened prior to me thinking about Bigfoot or something to that effect. I told a buddy of mine, my encounters. he is a huge bigfoot fan and it turned me on to some podcast. That’s when I started also looking at reports and sightings in the Liberty County area and ran across a story that y’all had investigated in Liberty.
Sounds:
The roars were about 5 or so seconds long. About 15-20 seconds apart. So loud i could feel them. My dad said the “person” walking through the marsh was his father’s ghost and it was definitely on two legs. When I was paced out, the only sound I heard was the extra step, and the small trees being pushed over.
Additional observations:
None. Again i was thinking this was hogs and never entertained anything else. Thus I didn’t pay attention to time, smells, nor other animals going silent.
Investigator's Observations
Investigator(s): Dusty Haithcoat and Ken Helmer
The following is a synopsis of the investigation of events that allegedly occurred in Liberty Co. Texas.
On 10/31/23, D. Haithcoat and K. Helmer met with the witness on the witness' 50-acre property outside of Hardin, Liberty Co. Texas.
Haithcoat and Helmer arrived on site at 1620 to find the witness awaiting them. After some brief introductions, the men geared up and the witness proceeded to show Helmer and Haithcoat where the events occurred. After approximately a one-hour tour, the men headed back to their vehicles and grabbed chairs and extra gear to conduct an on-site attempt to elicit a response from possible wood apes in the area. The men proceeded to a small clearing surrounded by extremely heavy undergrowth and set up in a rough circle. The ad hoc team was accompanied by Helmer's dog as well as a stray puppy who followed the team since arriving on site. Then men chatted quietly and produced several rounds of wood knocks with a cricket bat (provided by Helmer) intermittently throughout the night. As the sun dropped, it was noted the temperature did as well. All the men donned extra jackets or poncho liners and covered the dogs as best as possible. The team intermittently scanned through the thermal scope with no result. Throughout the night, the men noted no discernible response from the target species. At approximately midnight, the team made their way to their vehicles. All left the site at approximately 12:15 a.m. on 11/01/23.
Weather: clear and mild through the late afternoon with clear and cold at night. Winds were approximately 5mph at most. The moon was waning gibbous. No precipitation or fog.
General observations: The land is located on a 50-acre parcel surrounded by other small hunting tracts and hobby farms. The tree growth is generally a mix of hardwood and pine with thick underbrush. Greenbrier and oak were also noted. We noted multiple areas of turned-up ground due to pigs rooting as well as multiple deer and hog tracks throughout. No scrapes or rubs were noted, however, several old hog wallows were seen. The witness indicated a large "swampy area" toward the rear of the property close to where he was "roared" at and there is also a small stock pond just behind the dwellings for an alternate water source.
Methods of observation: Direct visual/ auditory observation, white and red lensed flashlights, thermal optic, canine alerting. No enhanced auditory gear was used.
Animal interactions: a total of three small puppies with one following us throughout the day/ night. Five small/ medium feral hogs were visualized through thick brush at approximately 40 yards via the thermal after the team was first alerted by the dogs and then heard some rustling to their west. Of significant interest were the howls heard by the team of what Helmer believed to be a Red Wolf or coyote-red wolf hybrid. Helmer noted that the howls stood out from the other coyotes as being somewhat deeper and longer than regular coyote howls. After some thought, Haithcoat agreed as they sounded similar to the howls he heard in Sam Houston National Forest in October of 2012. The team also noted multiple barred owl calls throughout the evening/ night.
Conclusions: The witness appears truthful in all aspects of related events. His story remained consistent, we did not notice any "upselling" of events or adding on to the story afterward. There were no physical indications of deceit noted. The witness brought forth other events on the property he noted throughout his life he found "odd" but did not attempt to use the events noted as evidence. Rather, he was curious if the events could be possible ape activity or related activity. The property is noted to be a typical hunting/ farming community found in East Texas. The property itself and surrounding areas, whilst not remote, provide plenty of cover, water, and ample feeding opportunities for all manner of typical fauna as well as the North American Wood Ape. It should also be noted the NAWAC's database shows multiple possible encounters within 20km of this location. In conclusion, I find the witness to be truthful and that there is probably ape activity on his property. As an addendum, I find that perhaps the use of dogs to alert investigators pulling watch at night with thermals may allow a better opportunity to collect a holotype and document the target species. Helmer's dog as well as the stray puppy not only alerted the team each time animals were within 50 yards of the team's location but where the animals were located giving the observer with the thermal an accurate direction to look thus allowing for quick target acquisition and recognition of the animal. I believe that the use of dogs for observational purposes could significantly tip the scales in the NAWAC's favor.
The gentleman who gave us this report is a homicide detective for Houston PD. He was very candid and even gave us some insight on how useless big city judicial systems are on prosecuting murders, and even worse how uncooperative the community is. This led me to believe what he heard and experienced were very real, though and can't completely say it was an ape. But the stories he told were what we know.
