Hiker has face-to-face daytime encounter

Report Details

Occurrence date: November/2013
Location: Cherokee County, TX
Nearby/Vicinity: Jacksonville
Time / Conditions: 13:00 — Clear and sunny
# of Witnesses: 1

Witness Account:
I lived in a lake cabin for my first year of college. The lake and surrounding land are owned by a hunting club that has been around since the lake was built in the 1930s. My closest neighbor was an older gentleman that had lived most of his life on this property. He always reminded me to take some kind of protection when I when hiking. I never pay him too much attention. In 2013 in early November (I can't remember the date) I decided to go hiking that afternoon. So around 2pm, I was headed out the door walking past my neighbor's house and waving at him as I made my way to the trailhead. I hung my orange flag on the post to let people know I was hiking on that part of the property in hunting season. No flags were on the post when I got there so I know I was the only one on that particular part of the property when I was there(it was a small hunting club with only 20ish members, so if someone was on the hill beside me it was unlikely) so I continued on the trail about a mile to the first plot were I usually crept around the corner before I got there because there may be some deer that I would stop and watch from a distance. This time there were not any deer. So I started to walk to the plot.

Now I'm going to take a second a describe the immediate geography of this part of the property. The trail hugged the side of the hill and at this point, I was near to the top. The feed plot was just off the left side of the trail. And immediately to the right of the trail, the hill dropped off pretty harshly to a wash that ran to the lake. I would say it dropped about 25 feet to the bottom of the wash and It was steep enough that if I fell in, I would not be able to climb back up to the trail. So I started to walk into the clearing(feed plot). Then outside of a pump jack that was about 300 yards away that constantly ran because it was automated. Everything went quiet. Birds stopped chirping, squirrels got still. I was being watched by something. The woods just don't go silent like that so I immediately went on guard. At this moment I was standing in the middle of the feed plot 20 yards away from the tree line in any direction. Scared I turned around to see if I could retreat back to where I came from. Because I had nothing on me. I was ill-prepared to defend myself if I needed to. After I turned around and saw that nothing was behind me, but not sure what was watching I quickly walked back to the treeline. The moment I got back to the treeline facing the direction of the trailhead. I heard what sounded like something of a low grumbling whoop to my right side (hillside of the trail). And I froze. Taking a second to collect my thoughts of "I walked right past this thing" and " it is between me and the house". I made the decision to confront it thinking it may be a black bear (they are rare in that part of Texas but people see them from time to time). I'm 6 foot 2 inches tall and 240ish pounds at this point. This is what you're supposed to do with a black bear. And hogs, wolves, mountain lions don't make the sound I just heard. So I yelled "HEYY!!! THIS IS MY HILL". And It stepped out from behind a pine tree about 10 yards to my front and right. And yelled back at me. It was a lot bigger than me. After that, it took one step over the trail and jumped to the bottom of the wash. I could hear it running on 2 feet for a few seconds. I ran back to the house. My neighbor said he heard a deep echoing yell before he saw me running home.

Physical evidence:
I was scared out of my mind, I did not go hiking again that year. Just visual evidence, auburn/brown hair 7-8 feet tall, had breasts and large teeth in the k9 position. Looked like what would fit the traditional description of a bigfoot from other stories I've heard.

Sounds:
Low grumbling whoop. And deep rangy yell.

Additional observations:
It was 10 yards away from me and did something not humanly possible.

Investigator's Observations

Investigator(s): Lawrence Burns

This investigation was conducted as a result of an incident that allegedly occurred in Cherokee County, Texas, in November 2013.

I interviewed the witness on February 21, 2022, at approximately 4:30 PM. I "cold-called" the putative witness and he answered the call. He was able to recall the incident without hesitation. When I had read the report I was curious why there was so much detail in the report up to the point of the visual observation and then it was very vague and basic. He was able to describe the animal in much more detail on the phone, but it seemed like talking about the actual visual encounter was more difficult. It seemed to me that the witness encountered something, most likely a wood ape, that scared him so badly that it still disturbs him to this day. His story matched his report and there were no signs of deception. The witness was a boy scout, was very knowledgeable about the outdoors and local wildlife, and was certain it was not a bear, deer, or any other large animal.

The witness was hiking along a trail when he heard a growl. Thinking it could be a black bear the witness yelled at the unknown animal in an attempt to scare it off. At that point, an animal approximately 7 feet tall, covered in "long reddish-brown hair," and standing on two legs stepped out from the trees and onto the trail approximately 10 yards from the witness. The animal then looked directly at the witness and made a loud yell/howl vocalization before stepping across the trail and running away on two legs.

The witness described the animal as being on two legs, about 7-8 feet tall, had a cone-shaped head, had long red/auburn/dark brown colored hair, breasts, dark brown eyes, and nostrils on the front of the nose, not on the bottom like a human's. The witness could not see any genitalia. The animal also had large canines and tubular incisors that narrowed before coming to a flat end. The witness stated he could only see the upper teeth because it raised its head when it howled at him. The witness said he was 20 years old, 6'02" tall, and was 220 - 240 lbs. at the time of the incident. The animal was so much larger than the witness that it scared the witness so badly that when the animal left the witness ran the whole way home and never went back to that area alone.

Something to note: When the witness first described the animal stepping out from the trees, the witness said "...and then the tree that I had just walked right past stepped out onto the trail..."

When I asked him to go over that part again he said it must have been right behind the tree and that he had walked right past it without seeing it just prior to the incident. I just found his initial phrase interesting because I believe due to their size, long hair, and ability to remain still, wood apes are often simply overlooked and our brains interpret what we see to be a tree.

The witness said he has only told his father about the incident and the father did not seem to believe him. The incident occurred on private property and the witness no longer has access to that property.

I found the witness to be credible and believe the witness may well have had a very close encounter with a wood ape.
