Witness Account:
I was with my brother and friends, searching for Indian artifacts and arrowheads in a cave. We were near the Buffalo Wildlife Mgmt. Area and the White River. We found bones, branches, tree limbs in the cave. When we left the cave, we noticed rocks coming down from above us. We saw a tall, hairy, animal on top of the ridge throwing or kicking rocks. The animal was running on two legs after us. The animal ran and kept pace with our pick up truck. The truck was going 30 to 40 mph.
Physical evidence:
Branches, limbs, pine needles and animal bones.
Hand/foot prints:
None.
Sounds:
No sounds.
Additional observations:
There was a musky smell in the cave. It was wooded, with some livestock and farms in the area. People have seen and heard things, but do not want to talk about it for fear of ridicule.
It is a remote area not far from the White River and the Buffalo River. Also near the Silamore National Forest and the Buffalo WMA in the Ozarks.
Investigator's Observations

This investigation was conducted as a result of an incident that allegedly occurred in Baxter County, Arkansas, in 1988.
This sighting allegedly took place in North Central Arkansas, in Baxter County. The nearest town is Norfork. This area is near the White River and the Buffalo River, the Silamore National Forest and the Buffalo Wildlife Mgmt Area; it is a very remote area in the Ozarks.
I interviewed the witness on 18 September 2002. His sighting took place in the fall of 1987 or 1988. He was 16 or 17 years old. The time was around dusk. The temperature was in the 70s.
The witness, his brother and some friends were cave hunting, looking for Native American artifacts and arrowheads. They were in a cave called Old Bat Cave. They had spent 6-7 hrs in the cave. They ate their lunches while hunting arrowheads.
During their time in the cave they found something that resembled a nest. Branches, limbs and pine needles were collected. Animal bones were lying nearby. The cave had a heavy musky smell to it. They were leaving the cave when they noticed rocks were falling from the top of the ridge above the cave. These were some good size rocks. The witness could not tell if the rocks were thrown or pushed. The group started walking down the mountain, stopped and turned around to see what was on top of the ridge; they noticed something moving. It was very tall, reportedly over six feet in height. It had big shoulders, with long, brownish hair. The subject also had a gorilla-shaped head. It was moving in the shadows. The subject was running on two legs down the mountain behind them.
The witness and his brother ran to their pick up truck. The brother seemed pretty frightened because he pulled the door handle of the side of the truck. Their friends ran to their truck. While the group was driving away on the gravel road, the witness's brother looked out the driver side window. He saw whatever it was that chased them down the mountain was running alongside the truck; it was keeping pace. The truck was going 30-35 mph. Then it quickly cut off the road and went into the woods.
The friends were driving their truck behind them. They called the witness on the CB radio. They wanted to know what was chasing all of them down the mountain, and what could keep pace with the truck on two legs. They quickly ruled out a bear.
There are chicken, hog and cattle farms in the area. This area is very wooded and remote, and has a water and food source. The witness went back to this cave a month later. He found that the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission had fenced off the cave. The reason is unknown.
I have a relative in the county just west from where this sighting took place. I visited there in July. The witness offered to show me the area the next time I am visiting my relative.
