Witness Account:
I was driving home from Kenefick approaching Long John Creek on FM 1008. I suddenly saw standing very near the left hand side of the road a large, dark "man" shaped figure. It happened very quickly and I didn't get a very good look but it was tall, maybe 6 1/2-7 feet, and very broad at the shoulders. I turned around at the next drive and returned to where I saw it. I looked around for a few seconds with a flashlight but didn't see anything on either side of the road. I couldn't look very well as it was private property. I know the owners and I may ask them if they had ever seen anything like this before.
Investigator's Observations

This interview was conducted as a result of an alleged sighting of a large upright biped that matches the description of a sasquatch in Liberty County, Texas in February of 2010.
After an initial telephone interview, fellow NAWAC investigator Daryl Colyer and I interviewed the witness in person at his home and at the sighting location. The witness described the event in detail to us as we sat in his backyard, which incidentally, he told us, is about one-quarter of a mile from the site ?as the crow flies.? The witness recalled that he was driving north on FM 1008, headed home from a meeting in Kenefick at approximately 9:30 P.M. The witness rounded a slight curve in the road and spotted a very large, dark, upright figure standing just off the left shoulder on the opposite side of the road. The witness caught a brief glimpse of the figure as he passed at fifty to fifty-five miles per hour. The witness, wanting to get a second look, stopped and turned his truck around at the first opportunity. When he arrived back at the sighting location the subject was gone. The witness then grabbed a flashlight?which he keeps in his truck at all times?and stepped out of his vehicle to see if he could further identify the subject. He reported that he was shaking and was more than a bit unnerved upon contemplating what it was that he had seen. For this reason?and the fact that the subject had been on private property?he did not venture past the shoulder of the road to look. He did not manage to spot the subject again.
The sighting lasted only a few seconds but the witness claimed to have been only twenty to thirty feet away. His initial overall impression of the size of the subject was that it was very broad and six and one-half to seven feet tall. He was not able to discern color and could only say it was dark. The witness said it was almost like seeing a silhouette. The witness discerned no eye-shine but did have the impression the subject was facing his oncoming vehicle. The witness did not hear or smell anything unusual at the time of the sighting nor did he after returning to the site upon turning around. The side of the road where the subject was seen is a privately-owned piece of property with a residence on it. When asked if the subject could have been a person?possibly the property owner?the witness said firmly, "There is no way it was a person." The witness was equally emphatic when asked about various other candidates, such as black bear, horse, cow, hog, and man-in-costume. ?No way,? he said.
One of the property owners was present when we conducted an on-site investigation with the witness. The property owner confirmed that back in February the witness had asked about sightings of any unusual animals on the property. The property owner said that the witness was told a large cat had been seen. The property owner then said that the witness asked about anything "sort of like a primate." The witness then shared the story of his encounter with the property owners. While the property owners have not experienced any similar encounters, we were told by the one property owner that the witness is indeed reliable and credible and that there is no reason to discount the account. The property owners do not believe that the witness has perpetrated any sort of deception or hoax.
It should be noted at this time that the property is surrounded by forest. The opposite side of the road is heavily forested as well. The property also features a small lake/pond that is situated right off the road and would have been directly behind the location where the subject was standing. Indeed, the entire area is heavily forested with dense pine and hardwoods. The Trinity River is a mere two miles or so to the east. Just to the north of the site is Long John Creek, which is a tributary of the Trinity River.
Colyer and I both reached the conclusion that the witness saw something for which he could not account. We agreed that there was no deception on the part of the witness and that he truly believed what he was telling us. If the description given by the witness of a large upright biped is accurate?and we could discern no reason to discount his description if we accept the possibility of the sasquatch?s existence?then known animals that inhabit the area can be ruled out as possible candidates for the sighting. It would also seem reasonable to assume that had it been a person walking along the road they would have likely still been present when the witness turned around and returned to the spot where the subject was seen, not to mention that their size would certainly have been freakish. A reenactment of the sighting indicated that the subject?s size would almost certainly have precluded it from being human. As part of the reenactment, we had the witness stand in the road at the approximate spot from which he saw the subject. Colyer, who stands right at six feet tall, stood in the approximate spot where the subject was located. The witness stated that the subject was far taller and wider than Colyer. Colyer then raised his arm over his head and the witness agreed that the subject stood at a height approximating that of his upraised hand, which would have made the subject at least seven feet tall. In addition to the reenactment, we were able to see that there are no trees, structures, signs, etc., in the area that the witness could have misidentified.
The NAWAC continues to collect and investigate reports of encounters?both contemporary and historical?with strange, bipedal ape-like creatures in Liberty County and surrounding Big Thicket Counties. These counties in Southeast Texas continue to make up the most prolific area in the four-state region for reports of encounters of this nature. Farm-to-Market Road 1008?which roughly parallels the Trinity River in its western riparian margin?seems to be a particularly productive roadway in terms of such encounters; it runs north and south through densely-forested rural countryside in the heart of Liberty County.
