Report Details

Occurrence date: June/2000
Location: Wood County, TX
Nearby/Vicinity: Mineola
Time / Conditions: 6:00 PM — Clear but the sun was setting.
# of Witnesses: 2

Witness Account:
About 8-10 years ago my best friend and I were running about in the woods down some trails about an 8th of a mile or so behind my house. It was getting dark so we started to jog home, all I was hearing was the crunch of small rocks (not quite like gravel) under our feet. All of a sudden I heard a loud crash and I reached behind me, grabbing her shirt by her chest stopping her and asking her if she heard anything because it sounded really close. She said no and I pointed in the direction I thought it came from and said "it came from over there," in which case she pointed a little to the right and said, "NO! It?s right there!" I then saw a large beast covered in a dark brownish fur stand up from being on all fours to standing on twos, side step twice to hide behind a tree and peeked out from around it. I noticed no ears like a bear would have and no smell. It made no noise other than the crash it had caused earlier. Not sure if he had jumped out of a tree, fell down, was just knocking over trees, or what. I didn?t notice any moving bushes or trees. There was a large bush between us so I really only saw about his waist up, never noticed any hands or feet. I didn?t get a good look at his face, the sun was setting and it was getting rather dark in the thick woods.

We slowly sidestepped around the little bend where the animal was. It was about 20-30 feet from us. Once past it we took off running as fast as we could and ran all the way home. We heard it running beside us, a little back in the woods, staying clear of the trail we were on but he kept pace with us. It seemed he stayed behind us off to the right. He ran beside us for at least 100 yards or so before we no longer heard any commotion. We have not been back out in those woods since, especially by ourselves and not without it being full sunlight outside. He seemed about 6 feet tall.

Sounds:
Only crashing right before we saw him.

Investigator's Observations

Investigator(s): Ken Stewart and John Morley

This investigation was conducted as a result of an incident that allegedly occurred in Wood County, east of Mineola, in June 2000.

NAWAC investigators John Morley, Daryl Colyer, Chris Buntenbah and I (Ken Stewart) interviewed the primary witness and submitter of this report on 8 March 2008, while investigating another reported incident in the general area (see 2 March 2008 NAWAC Wood County, Texas Report # 01080019). The primary witness lived in the area for several years and was an accomplished hunter even in her teens.

We hiked with the witness to the reported sighting location which is surrounded by bottomland near a creek. The witness stated that at the time of the sighting the bottom was covered in a dense green thicket of hardwood and pine trees. We noted that the area appears to be prime wildlife habitat. We found abundant signs of wildlife including tracks of deer, large feral hogs, bobcats, coyotes, raccoon, opossum and skunk.

The witness showed us where she and her friend allegedly saw the figure stand up and move behind an oak tree. No facial features could be discerned. The tree is located slightly downhill from the pathway. She stated that as they ran back to her home, the subject kept pace with them for more than 100 yards even though the subject was running through the dense thicket.

After the incident, she told both her mother and sister. We spoke to the mother and sister, confirming that the witness told them she had seen a bigfoot.

I also spoke to the second witness at length by phone. She is a professional animal trainer. She confirmed the account and added the following details. When she heard the sound of cracking wood, she said her peripheral vision saw a dark figure fall to the ground and later stand up from a crouching position. She estimated the figure to be between six - six and one-half feet tall (6 - 6.5). When asked to describe the width and build of the figure, she said the upright form seemed to be the size of a normal twenty-year-old man but completely covered with hair.

The second witness recounted that she began to run away after the form appeared to step towards them. She estimated that she heard the subject keep pace with them through the thicket for about 200 yards. At one point when looking to her right, she saw the figure moving through the woods.

Approximately six weeks after the incident, the second witness described that she saw a similar looking figure while riding in her mother's car. She stated that she and her mom were traveling down a nearby road to a grocery store. She told me that she looked to her right to observe a bipedal hairy figure looking at her across the fence row about thirty feet away. She said the subject was standing next to a tree in a wooded area. She could not determine if he was the same figure that was seen the previous month, but the color, height and build were similar. When asked if she may have only seen a tall stump, she replied that she also saw an arm move.

During my conversation with the second witness, she constantly referred to the subject as "it." She also strongly emphasized that "it" was not a person or a bear.

Investigator Conclusions: We were able to corroborate the submitter's account with the second witness. Both exhibited emotions of fear and anxiety when describing the incident. We believe the witnesses were truthful in their accounts.

The area has been added as an area of interest to the NAWAC ongoing camera trap project, Operation Forest Vigil. As such, we will continue to monitor the camera traps already placed there over the remainder of the year and will update this report with addenda of any pertinent data as needed.

One of the witnesses points to the area where visual contact was first made. During the time of the alleged incident, the hardwoods would have been green with a full covering of leaves, as opposed to how they appear in this late winter photograph.
