Witness Account:
I was driving, watching the road and my husband was in the passenger seat doing the same. We were heading home only about 1/4-1/2 mile away. It ran in front of us across the road so fast that it appeared to be escaping from something. When it darted in front of us, it was so close that I had to hit my breaks to avoid hitting it. It appeared to be at least 7 feet tall. I drive a '97 Dodge minivan. It was obvious that the creature was taller than the van and totally covered from head to toe with brown hair.
When it came across the road, it easily took two strides to get across. Starting from the edge of the road on the driver's side, one stride to the center stripe, from the center stripe to the passenger's edge of the road, one stride and from the passenger's edge it took another stride across a fairly wide ditch and jumped over a fence through a shallow group of trees into an open field.
Additional observations:
Extremely tall covered with brown hair from head to toe. Large body frame.
Investigator's Observations
Investigator(s): Daryl Colyer
This investigation was conducted as a result of an incident that allegedly occurred in Navarro County, Texas, in February 2006.
These witnesses saw the Weird Travels "Legend of Bigfoot" program on the Travel Channel featuring the NAWAC. Watching the show prompted them to contact us about their experience.
I met the witnesses at their residence near Navarro Mills Lake in East-central Texas; my wife accompanied me during the investigation. The witnesses were waiting under their carport for my wife and me to arrive. I had already spoken to the couple at length on the phone, and concluded that I needed to further interview them in person, survey the site and the surrounding area, especially since the incident allegedly had taken place within the last few weeks.
There have been rumors for years in Navarro County of an unknown, large, hairy, bipedal ape-like creature that, from time to time, has been referred to as the "Chambers Creek Monster." In talking with the couple, my wife and I were made aware of an elderly acquaintance of theirs from some years back who made claims of having encountered the so-called "Chambers Creek Monster" one night after it supposedly had harassed his animals. The old timer claimed to have put two 30-06 rounds into the creature at point blank range and, according to the story, it seemingly survived, walking casually off into the darkness. As the story went, the creature had taken the life of one of the old man's dogs.
Before meeting the witnesses, my wife and I drove around some in the immediate area and quickly took note of the numerous hardwood bottoms, and oak/cedar woods in the higher areas. The area is very rural and Navarro Mills Lake is the main body of water; there are numerous creeks and branches in the area along with a degree of forestation. Surrounding the lake is the US Army Corps of Engineers' Navarro Mills Wildlife Management Area, densely wooded and approximately 3,500 - 4,000 acres in size. There are some houses scattered throughout the area, and some open areas that appear as pasture.
Upon arriving at the witnesses' house, they eagerly showed me an area just across the narrow county road in front of their house, where their dog, a chow, had reportedly encountered an unseen something that growled viciously late one night in January; the wife was witness to the event. After the unseen animal growled loudly, and in a low pitch at the chow, the dog stopped barking and hastily retreated. The wife recalled hearing the sounds of branches snapping, along with the growling.
The witnesses took my wife and me to the place of the encounter, which was not far at all from their house. It was the impression of the husband and wife that the subject cleared the road just a mere ten feet or so in front of their vehicle, towering over it in the process. The front of the mini-van appeared to be about five and one half feet in height. Both witnesses remembered glancing upward to see the full height of the subject.
The night of the reported visual encounter, the witnesses were returning from visiting relatives; the children were in the back of the vehicle, and were apparently oblivious to what was transpiring. As the witnesses passed a wooded area to their left with some houses nestled in it, they reportedly saw a large upright, hair-covered bipedal subject quickly dart into the road immediately in front of them, from left to right. Two creeks run through the heart of the wooded area from which the subject appeared to be exiting. The witnesses' impression was that the subject was hastily fleeing the area to the safety of a field or pasture that abutted another dense wooded area on their right. Perhaps it had raided one of the rural homes (chickens, garbage, etc.), or maybe some of the local dogs were bringing it unwanted attention.
When the figure first stepped into the road, the wife hit the brakes, slowing down the vehicle dramatically. The witnesses agreed that the subject took only two steps in clearing the road, and took another step over the ditch, before it easily hurdled the five-strand barbed wire fence on their right that bordered the field. Once the subject cleared the fence, it disappeared in a small stand of oaks near the fence.
The wife remembered that the subject was "brownish," and the husband recalled what he perceived as a sort of gray hue. Both witnesses were certain that the subject never once looked at them. After the subject disappeared into the darkness, the family resumed normal speed and proceeded toward home.
The witnesses told my wife and me that immediately after the figure crossed the road in front of them, both of them looked at each other, absolutely amazed at what they had just seen. Both wanted to make sure that their spouse had seen what they saw. Both told us that they were immediately certain that what they saw was what many refer to as bigfoot.
My wife and I left the witnesses and proceeded into the WMA. We hiked the area until after dusk. We noted nothing unusual. The WMA was quite wooded, with abundant water and wildlife sign, particularly wild hog and deer.
