Investigator's Observations
Investigator(s): Brian Petree
This interview was conducted as a result of a reported sasquatch sighting that allegedly occurred near the Kimble/Menard county line at approximately 02:30 on 1 January 2006.
I contacted the witness by telephone, and discussed the incident in great detail. The witness is a 52 year old truck driver, who currently resides in San Antonio, Texas. Prior to becoming a truck driver, the witness was a police officer in a South Texas town. The witness has hunted and spent time in the outdoors his entire life, and is familiar with native and exotic wildlife throughout the southern United States. The witness seemed honest and straightforward regarding what he saw.
During the early hours of January 1st, 2006, the witness, an over-the-road truck driver, left San Antonio alone with a grocery load, enroute to San Angelo, Texas. The witness traveled west on Interstate 10 to Junction, and turned north on US Hwy 83. At approximately 02:30 AM, the witness was about 16 miles north of Junction on US Hwy 83, he observed a large upright figure standing on the east side of the highway, behind a guardrail. The witness stated that he was traveling at a speed of approximately 70 miles per hour. The witness stated as he began closing in on the upright figure, he activated his high beam headlights. The witness stated that he observed a bipedal subject, covered with a "rusty brown" colored hair, approximately 3 inches in length. The witness stated that he utilized the average height of a guardrail to estimate the height of the figure at between 8 to 8.5 feet in height. The subject was standing upright, and motionless, directly behind the guardrail. The witness stated that the subject appeared to be waiting for him to pass, so that it could cross the road. The witness estimated the weight of the animal to be between 350-375 pounds; he also estimated that the figure was about 3 feet wide in the chest. The witness described what he saw as having a round shaped head, and with hair that seemed to be longer on the head than the rest of the body. The witness was unable to provide any details of the face, other than it appeared to have less hair than the rest of the body, and it looked more human-like than animal. The subject was described as standing erect, but appeared to be slightly stooped over. The subject did not exhibit any signs of expression, fear, or aggression. The witness described the entire incident to have lasted "several seconds."
As the witness passed the figure, he was confused as to what he had just observed. He stated that he had heard of bigfoot before, but that he was unfamiliar with what they looked like. It wasn't until later that day, when the witness telephoned his wife and daughter to tell them about what he saw, that his daughter suggested that he might have indeed observed a bigfoot. At the insistence of the witness's daughter, he reported his sighting to the NAWAC.
I am very familiar with the location of the sighting; I know someone who owns a ranch approximately 15 miles west of the location. The terrain is hilly, with the prominent vegetation being mountain cedar, mesquite, and prickly pear cactus. The predominant wildlife species in the area is whitetail deer, and there are substantial numbers of both javelina and feral hogs. The area is sparsely populated, and the primary agriculture activity is cattle, sheep, and goat production. The only crop production in the area is hay farming. The geographic location of the area is on the northwestern edge of the Edward Plateau Region. Consequently, the environment is semi-arid, with limestone outcroppings. The area of the encounter lies approximately midway between the Llano and San Saba river basins, which are approximately 30 miles apart.
The weather conditions at the time of the sighting were clear and cold. The visibility was good, and other than the witness's headlights, there was no ambient light present.
There are a few significant details which are important to note regarding this sighting. After the incident, the witness traveled to San Angelo, Big Spring, Midland, then continued back toward San Antonio. The witness passed the location of the sighting later the same day, at approximately 3:00 PM. Although the witness didn't stop, he further described that the encounter occurred in very close proximity to a substantial dry creek bed. The witness could not remember the name of the creek, but indicated that it would be the first major creek after turning north on US Hwy 83, from Interstate Highway 10. He described the area behind the guardrail as sloping downward, and eventually meeting a barbed wire fence. The witness further stated that he was unable to see the subject in his rearview mirror, after passing it. Approximately 150 yards north of the sighting, the witness observed a large live javelina or feral hog on the west side of the roadway. The witness is not sure if this had anything to do with what he saw, but felt that it was significant enough in his mind to report it to me.
At the time of the sighting, the witness indicated that he had only been driving for about 3 hours, and was not fatigued. He later reported the incident to his supervisor and some other drivers, and was belittled by their comments. The witness did not report this sighting to any other research group, or law enforcement agency.
Several weeks after the sighting, the witness told an employee of the truck stop in Junction about his encounter. The truck stop employee indicated that there were two or three other people who have had similar experiences in the area.
My conclusion is that the witness is credible, and that he did indeed observe something for which he had no explanation on the early morning hours of 1 January 2006. It should be noted that the geographic area does not have a history of reported sasquatch sightings nor is it an area of abundant rainfall, however there are two major rivers in this area, with dense vegetation along the riparian margins that would provide water and concealment, and a means of travel for a nocturnal, elusive, nomadic and highly intelligent species such as the sasquatch.
It is my intent to travel to this area, and to conduct further research within the next few weeks.
