- Class 1b
- Class 1, Corroboration: Reports involving a sighting, and accompanied by another form of support.1b A report investigation results in a sasquatch observation or the documentation of clear tracks or other forms of physical evidence by an investigator.
- Class 1c
- Class 1, Corroboration: Reports involving a sighting, and accompanied by another form of support.1c An investigator determines that a visual encounter with a sasquatch/bigfoot by a very reliable observer is a distinct possibility, tangible corroborating evidence is documented, and all other sources can be reasonably ruled out.
- Class 1d
- Class 1, Corroboration: Reports involving a sighting, and accompanied by another form of support.1d A visual encounter with a sasquatch/bigfoot is a distinct possibility involving two or more reliable observers, and all other sources can be reasonably ruled out.
- Class 2
- Class 2, Competency: Reports involving sightings by professionally trained or highly skilled observers.2 Investigator determines that a visual encounter with a sasquatch/bigfoot is a distinct possibility, the observer is exceptionally trustworthy, professionally trained, and experienced in the outdoors and/or is accustomed to looking for and recording details (e.g., biologist, anthropologist/archaeologist, ranger, trapper/tracker/seasoned hunter, bird watcher, game warden, naturalist, law enforcement), and other explanations can be reasonably excluded.
- Class 3a
- Class 3, Credibility: Sightings or possible wood ape evidence reported by credible witnesses.3a Investigator determines that a visual encounter with a sasquatch/bigfoot is a distinct possibility, the observer is credible, and all other sources can be reasonably ruled out.
- Class 3b
- Class 3, Credibility: Sightings or possible wood ape evidence reported by credible witnesses.3b Unidentifiable vocalizations were reported and there is accompanying tangible evidence to possibly indicate the presence of a sasquatch/bigfoot, the observer is very reliable, and other sources can be reasonably ruled out.
- Class 3c
- Class 3, Credibility: Sightings or possible wood ape evidence reported by credible witnesses.3c No visual encounter occurred, but physical evidence was found to indicate the presence of a sasquatch/bigfoot (tracks, hair, scat, etc.), the observer is very reliable, and other sources can be reasonably ruled out.

Witness Account:
A friend and I have been attempting to do some field work on our own for several months now. We set up camp at a campsite on the evening of Friday 5/13. We got a bite to eat and rested until 2:00am. At that time we got up and began to drive the forest roads hoping for a sighting. We were driving a forest road when we saw something on the left side of the road about 30-40 yards in front of us. It seemed to be "man size" and stood upright. My feeling was it was about to cross the road when we came over a small hill. As we slowed to a stop it turned toward us then took two quick steps back into the woods. It was dark in color and was most definitely upright on two legs. We had a nightvision monocular with us and scanned the area where it went back into the woods but didn't pick anything up. We did not get out of the car at that time to look for prints. We did continue to drive the area until about 4:30 am but saw nothing else. We returned to the area shortly after daybreak but found no prints or other evidence.
Physical evidence:
We were unable to locate any prints or other physical evidence when we returned to the site after daybreak.
Sounds:
We did not hear anything. We heard some strange howling on our first trip to the area. I have not heard anything unusual in the subsequent trips to the area.
Additional observations:
The animal we saw was a dark brown. It was difficult to make out much above the waist level. The car lights did allow a decent look at the legs. I did notice an arm swing as the animal turned and stepped back into the woods. It was not huge like a lot of the stories I have heard and read about. As I stated above, I would call it "man sized." No. We did have our windows down when the sighting took place but didn't smell anything.

This investigation was conducted as a result of an incident that allegedly occurred in Walker County, Texas, in the Sam Houston National Forest, 14 May 2005.
I met both of these men while giving a presentation about the subject at a Legacy Outfitters meeting earlier in 2005. Legacy Outfitters is a Christian men's outdoors group; I have given presentations on the subject for several different chapters in Texas.
At the time, both men were interested in learning more about the subject, and one of the witnesses approached me after the meeting was over and told me that he may have had some type of encounter in the Big Thicket years before, but he simply was not sure about what he actually saw. Both men were mildly skeptical about the subject, but retained open minds. The men emailed me a few times afterward seeking advice about areas with reported historical sightings.
As described in the submitted report, both men recalled hearing unusual vocalizations one of the first nights they were out. Both men had heard the so-called "Ohio Howl" during my presentation and online, and were familiar with how it sounded. However, they were unprepared for the possibility that they might actually hear it in the Sam Houston National Forest. They described themselves as being somewhat shaken by what they heard, as their skepticism was softened by the repeated, long unfamiliar howling vocalizations. The men told me of how they were unable to restfully sleep after hearing the howls; they were unnerved, even though the vocalizations originated from perhaps a mile west or northwest of their position.
The men told me that when they first saw the subject in the road in front of them, it appeared that they had caught it attempting to cross the forest service road; it was standing still on the left side of the road, perhaps 40 or so yards away. The men described it as being dark in color, almost "chocolate." It was hair-covered and was most certainly bipedal; the legs were thick as was its body. It was no more than six feet in height; the witnesses told me that it was smaller than what they had expected. However, the men both knew within a couple of seconds that the subject they were seeing was a sasquatch. Both legs were clearly visible; it seemed to display a degree of agility and speed as it appeared to jump the ditch, fleeing from the men and the lights of their quiet, slow-moving car. Neither of the witnesses could recall anything about a face. There was a second or two when they noted arm swing as the subject turned or shuffled to flee, before it appeared to leap the ditch and disappear into the forest.
The men sped up to the spot and attempted to see the subject in the woods, but could not make out anything in the very dense woods.
Both men were so shaken by the experience that for the remainder of the night/morning, they did not sleep. They finally went to a restaurant and spent their time there discussing what they had experienced. Their skepticism now completely gone, the men were reluctant to return to camp that morning. They did return to the area of the sighting later at about 10:00 A.M., but were unable to find any physical evidence of the subject's presence.
Both men were admittedly hesitant in sharing their experience. They were concerned that no one would believe them; indeed, the few people that they have told since the encounter have only greeted them with ridicule and derision. I know both men to be highly reliable and trustworthy individuals. The area of their sighting is one from which many reports have come.
Addendum 19 February 2008: the two men are now in the NAWAC and I know them to be extremely reliable trustworthy individuals. Since this report was originally published, I have returned to the site with the men several times, and they are certain that they underestimated the size of the subject. They only realized this after seeing another person perform in the role of the subject. They now believe that what they saw was a bit larger, wider and taller than a man who is six feet tall.
The witnesses are certain that what they saw was either a large agile person in a very convincing suit in the early morning hours who was able to run through the dense woods in total darkness in such a suit, or they saw a sasquatch.
