Case: 01030027

Class 1d

Two adult women experience visual encounter through house window while checking their dog kennels in early morning.

Report Details

Occurrence date: November/2003
Location: Harrison County, TX
Nearby/Vicinity: Harleton
Time / Conditions: 3:00 AM — Wooded, small swamp running through back of property.
# of Witnesses: 2

Witness Account:
I have a dog kennel where I raise and sell puppies. Every night when I get up out of the bed to go to the bath room I look out my window to check my kennels. My bathroom window looks out over my dog kennels. I don't turn on my lights while doing this because it obstructs my view.

I thought I was seeing things. There standing on the other side of the pens was a 7 to 8 ft hairy creature. The dogs were all in their houses as if cowering and it was deathly quiet. He was standing facing the dog pen at which point he turned to the east walked about three steps then he turned to the north and stood there. That's when I went and got my mother. She saw it too but not as clear as I. It stood there after my mom came in then it walked into the woods.

My house is surrounded on three sides by woods. It very secluded. Every night it's here and we are terrified. It screams often. My children have heard it. I know I sound like a fruit cake I don't tell anyone because I feel like people will think I'm crazy. I'm buying motion lights to see if it will make him go away. If you know of any other method to chase him away, please, please let me know.

There is no man that lives here. He's here every night, we can hear him scream. I don't know if neighbors have heard or seen anything. I don't want to be made fun of.

Physical evidence:
No footprints, just bushes bent and broke. A little fence around a cats grave was bent down.

Sounds:
Something screams occasionally, mostly at night. It sounds like a woman blood curdling, loud with a little bit of growl to it.

Additional observations:
7 to 8 foot tall. I couldn't see any facial features because of the light. There is a security light by the kennels, but its not very good. His knees moved like a person's, not a bear. He had hair all over him his feet were large, that's about the best description I can give. The window was closed. We have caught whiffs of something awful from time to time.

Investigator's Observations

Investigator(s): Charles DeVore, Jerry Hestand and Chris Buntenbah

This investigation was conducted as a result of an incident that allegedly occurred in Harrison County, Texas in November 2003.

I (Charles DeVore) interviewed both witnesses Sunday afternoon, 30 November 2003. Both were extremely straightforward and in my estimation their statements were compelling.

The primary witness, a 38-year-old mother of two, reportedly saw an unusual figure at 3:00 a.m. as she glanced out her bathroom window at her dog pens which is her normal habit every time she is in there; the window affords a very good view of the kennels. The kennels are quite close to her house and made of wide spaced fence wire combined with chain link fence for the smaller dogs. The subject was viewed through the wide spaced fence, which allowed for a very clear view. The estimated distance from the bathroom window to where the subject was first viewed was 40 feet. The subject was said to be facing the witness and "swaying sideways." The subject reportedly turned and walked 12 feet and stopped with its back to the house. The witness, in her own words, "almost in a state of shock," went and woke up her mother and they both returned to bathroom to view the subject still standing where it had stopped. At that time the subject became somewhat alerted and for whatever reason it walked off, disappearing into the underbrush.

The underbrush and woods start about 6 feet beyond the kennels and surrounds the house on three sides within 10 to 20 feet.

The Subject: The witnesses indicated that the subject was very tall and broad built with long hair; it was standing on two legs like a human. The witnesses did not notice the facial features; their attention was was drawn to the fact that the subject's legs bent back at the knees like a human and its arms seemed to hang just a couple inches below its knees. The witness(es) recalled that the subject had "long black hair," and noticed that the hair flowed around the legs and feet as it moved. The witness(es) did notice that the feet were very large. The subject's head appeared to be even with the roof top of the kennels beside which it had stopped. During our onsite investigation, I measured the roof top and it is six and one-half feet above the ground. The subject made no noise that the witnesses could discern and all the dogs (approximately 30) were totally quiet.

Lighting: The witnesses remembered that it was a clear, starlit night. There was no moon; it had already set that night. There is a very old and dim yard security light 25 feet from the house atop a 15-foot pole and approximately 5 feet to the left of where she first viewed the subject.

The Terrain: The house is on a small rise surrounded by very dense underbrush, woods and swamp land. There is a spring-fed creek about a 100 yards behind their house that flows into the Little Cypress River about 4 miles south.

Other Events: The witnesses told of how there have been many unexplained vocalizations, heavy stomping noises, occasional strong sewer smells, and losses of chickens that make more sense now since the visual encounter. According to the witnesses, an unseen prowler visited their place around midnight the night before we cam onsite. The women told us that the visitor was apparently walking around their house close enough for them to hear it breathing between making strange hooting or grunting sounds.

Conclusion: The report is compelling and the witnesses appear as reliable, truth-telling, respectable women with no inclination or affinity for wild stories or even the slightest embellishment. I believe we need to do more investigation in the area. We currently have camera traps mounted in the area and are actively investigating onsite.

Addendum; 6 December 2003, onsite investigation report compiled by Jerry Hestand and Chris Buntenbah:

After the first meeting Charles DeVore deployed two camera traps; one by the northwest back corner of house and second on the northeast side of the kennels. All pictures taken during the stay were of the witnesses' domesticated free-roaming cats and dogs. Because of this, the camera traps were removed from the house area and one was placed 150 to 250 feet from the house going east from the kennels. There are also two bait bags placed in this area. One is six feet from the ground and another is eight feet from the ground.

After arriving Saturday at about 1:00 p.m., we met with the mother and her son. The mother recounted her sighting of the evening of 27 November 2003, Thanksgiving.

The witness mentioned that the nights before the visual encounter reportedly took place that vocalizations were heard near the house and from the hill that is northeast of the house (Red Hill). This name was given to the hill because of the large amounts of red iron ore found in the soil of the hilltop.

After speaking with the mother and son, we took a look around the house with the son, aged 11, as our guide. As we walked through the brush to the west of the dog kennels we came upon an area that had a chicken or a large bird's feathers on the ground, white in color. It appeared as though a bird had had all its feathers stripped and had been possibly eaten here or elsewhere. The area was about three feet by three feet with feathers now flattened into the ground. There was no other evidence found. It should be noted that the residence has numerous free roaming domestic cats. Other animals in the area include bobcat, cougar/mountain lion, wild hogs, deer and coyote. Near the feathers we noticed a walnut tree. Most of the nuts were on the ground and not eaten. We were told there are also wild plums and wild berries in the area.

While hiking, we also noticed many natural underground springs. The springs appeared to have created small canals perhaps one foot wide and one hundred feet long. We noticed abundant small animal sign near the small streams as well as a number of deer tracks.

There are many wild blackberries growing in the area. Red Hill has a hard red sand/sandstone that covers the ground. The surrounding forest consists of pine and hardwood.

Also of interest is that the septic system appeared to be not properly processing the waste and was perhaps full. The air near the southwest side of the house had a foul septic smell. Nearby there was also a mound of cat litter.

We placed a camera trap on a tree by a bait bag about 30 yards from the house and another camera trap by the area where we had found the feathers earlier. We hung two bait bags from nearby trees. We also placed a camera trap on the so-called Red Hill, but with no bait.

Our night time surveillance of the area had no results. The camera traps did not even trigger. While we were packing up to leave in the early morning we heard a loud, low moan but remained uncertain of its origin or source. It sounded somewhat like a cow.

Second Addendum; 13 December 2003, by Jerry Hestand and Chris Buntenbah:

Additional conversations with the witnesses indicated that unknown vocalizations were heard from the hill top area on the morning of 7 December around 1:00 a.m. and on 10 December 2003.

Additional investigative visits are planned. Any significant finds by NAWAC investigators will be updated here.
