Class 3a

Hunters have dusk encounter on the Angelina River.

Report Details

Occurrence date: Fall/1978-1979
Location: Rusk County, TX
Nearby/Vicinity: Reklaw
Time / Conditions: Just about dark. — Wooded.
# of Witnesses: 2

Witness Account:
Me and a friend were walking alongside the Angelina River heading back to our truck when we stopped to listen for deer. It was almost dark and we wanted to use every minute that we could. As we were standing there my friend noticed a splashing sound coming from the river. We turned around and about 20-30 yards behind us we could hear heavy footsteps in the dry leaves. Then this 7-7 1/2 foot tall hairy creature on two legs swinging its arms, walked out of the tree line and took one step to reach the middle of the little country road we were walking down and one step on the far side of the road and it was gone. We heard it walk off for a little ways and that was it.

Sounds:
Other than the footsteps there was no other sound.

Additional observations:
It was 7-7 1/2 foot tall, very hairy, it was almost dark so we couldn't see the color of it. Just that it was dark. Looked to be about 400-450 pounds. Musky smell.

Investigator's Observations

Investigator(s): Craig Woolheater

This investigation was conducted as a result of an incident that allegedly occurred in Angelina County, Texas, along the Angelina River, in the fall of 1978 or 1979.

The witness saw a special report on TV with Jonna Fitzgerald on NBC56 Tyler-Longview featuring the NAWAC and reported sightings of bigfoot in East Texas. He decided to contact us after viewing this.

I interviewed the witness at length on 8 August 2002. He did not deviate from the original submitted report. He did have some additional details.

The witness indicated that the temperature was probably around 50-55 degrees. The leaves had started falling and it was getting dark earlier. As the witness recalled, he, his brother and a friend had been out hunting all afternoon without any luck. They were hunting along the Angelina River near Mud Creek.

They were walking along an old country road that ran roughly parallel to the Angelina River. They were returning to their vehicle and it was around dusk. The witness?s brother thought he saw a deer off in the trees and had them all halt while he circled around to try and flush it out. The witness and his friend were quietly standing there waiting on a deer to pop out of the tree line when the friend said that there was something coming across the river. They could hear splashing sounds, then something walking through the dry leaves. As the sound got closer, the men turned around and about 20-30 yards behind them, reportedly saw this a large figure walk out of the tree line; the witness estimated that it was likely more than seven feet tall. As the witness recalled, the subject took one step onto the road and the next step was on the other side of the road and then it was out of sight and gone.

It was almost dark so the witness could recall no details. He indicated that its color was dark, but it was impossible to tell the exact color. The witness recalled smelling a musky odor. For another minute they could hear it walking through the leaves and then it got quiet again. When his brother returned they asked him if he saw it or heard it, but he told them that he had no idea what they were talking about. He still laughs at them to this day whenever they talk about it.

The two witnesses have not seen anything like it since, but the primary witness has heard of other stories in the same general area. The second witness was unavailable for interview.
