Class 3a

2 fishermen encounter the "Chambers Creek Monster".

Report Details

Occurrence date: Summer/1964
Location: Ellis County, TX
Time / Conditions: Afternoon — Wooded, Ellis County possesses numerous farms and farming land, but my father and his friend were not nearby any farm at the time of the sighting.
# of Witnesses: 0

Witness Account:
My father and his friend were fishing at Chambers Creek between Ennis, Texas (Ellis County) and Corsicana, Texas (Navarro County) one summer afternoon. A large, hairy, man-like creature appeared from behind the brush and roared at them. My father and his friend fled the scene, leaving all of their tackle and bait behind, and were so frightened by what they saw, they drove backwards to Ennis. UPDATE: I originally posted my father's account of his sighting of the so-called "Chambers Creek Monster" back during the 60s on your site a while back.

A few weeks ago, my father came to North Texas for a visit to his old homestead, and I accompanied him to the exact location where he and his friend first witnessed the Chambers Creek Monster.

It's across Highway 287 in Ennis, Texas in a heavily wooded area. The creek itself runs through parallel to the highway and is crossed by a paved road and a concrete bridge with two concrete flap-like structures sloped on either side down to the creek. The exact spot was actually on the banks of the creek surrounded by trees and bushes. The creek bank gets very little sunlight and remains dark most of the time. On the other side of the bushes are more trees and a grassy pasture. The only house close by is nearly a quarter of a mile away.

The place looks like a perfect habitat for a Sasquatch-type creature, or any wild animal, for that matter. Also, my father mentioned smelling a stench that proceeded the monster's appearance. It's the first time I've ever heard of a smell associated with the monster.

My father also mentioned how the road leading to the creek and bridge goes all the way to Emhouse, some ten or fifteen miles away. Emhouse has its own monster legend in the "Goat-Man of Emhouse," a strange, giant, shaggy creature that possessed a goat's head and haunches for legs. After hearing this, I had to wonder, is the "Chambers Creek Monster" and the "Goat-Man of Emhouse" one and the same? If so, more than likely, the Goat-Man just had goat-like features applied to it due to a mistaken eyewitness account or maybe to apply demonic features to the creature.

I hope this helps. I have always believed my dad's account of his encounter with the monster, but seeing where it actually happened for the first time in my life really crystallized the story for me. It also makes me never want to be caught down there after dark.

Sounds:
My father said that it roared, but it wasn't like any roar that he had ever heard before.

Additional observations:
Large, hairy, and man-like. My father wasn't sure if it appeared to be ape-like, or anthropoid. He didn't stick around long enough to get a good look.

Investigator's Observations

Investigator(s): Bob Strain

The man who submitted the report was interviewed Aug. 26, 2002 at 6:30 p.m. by phone. He related some of the story from memory. This story stuck in his mind, he had heard it many times, and had told it many times, sort of a family story. It seems that his father and a friend were fishing, and a creature came upon them and roared loudly, frightening them enough for them to abandon their equipment, and drive backwards all the way to Ennis! They returned later to get their equipment, but didn't stay around long enough to investigate. Later, within the next few weeks, others saw the creature in the same general area. It was later dubbed "The Chambers Creek Monster".

The incident took place around noon of a hot summer day in the 1960's. It was very hot. The sighting occurred between Ellis Co., Ennis, Texas and Navarro Co., Corsicana, Texas. The Chambers Creek flows through this area. The men saw the creature on the shore of Chambers Creek in a semi-wooded area. The area is surrounded by farm land. There were no caves, mines, or any other abandoned shelters in the area of incident.

To the best of his memory, his father said the creature was at least 7 ft. tall, wide, and big. The animal was standing on 2 legs. The men were very frightened, so the sighting did not last long. The animal was close enough for them to determine that it was not human or a known animal, yet far enough to come upon them without them hearing it. His father was under the impression that the animal was aggressive because of its roar. No facial features were remembered from the story. A loud roar or growl was the only sound heard. The witnesses did not look for any tracks when they came back and retrieved their gear. The men did not smell any unusual odor, and did not know why the animal approached them.
