Case: 01020014

Class 3a

Cousins report close encounter while in woods behind uncle's pasture and house.

Report Details

Occurrence date: June/1973
Location: Rusk County, TX
Nearby/Vicinity: New London
Time / Conditions: Between 5 - 6 pm — There are agricultural facilities within 15 miles.
# of Witnesses: 8

Witness Account:
My cousins and I had taken a walk into the woods behind my uncle's pasture. It was getting dark as we walked into the woods because the sunlight was being blocked by the trees. We stopped for a minute to rest and heard something move behind us. We turned and there it stood, about 30 feet away. We all took off running as fast as we could. It followed for a few seconds, then stopped. We ran all the way home. Our parents thought we were crazy or that we had seen a bear.

Physical evidence:
We never went back to look for evidence. We were terrified. We were only 15 to 18 years old.

Sounds:
The only sounds were the sticks breaking as it chased us. In 1991 or 1992, my sister lived in a mobile home by some woods in Rusk County. It was on Dudley road in Kilgore. We were asleep and my sister woke me up screaming. I was already crying when I woke up, and could hear the most awful noise that I had ever heard in my life. It sounded like an unknown creature being skinned alive or worse. The voice was really deep. I was horrified, everyone was. My sister had called her ex and he heard it on the phone and drove to where we were as fast as he could with a gun. All the kids were screaming. We called the cops but the officer would not go looking behind the house.

Additional observations:
It was like 8' tall, it was reddish brown in color, really hairy, and looked mean. I was too scared to notice any odors.

Investigator's Observations

Investigator(s): Jerry Hestand

This investigation was conducted as a result of an incident that allegedly occurred near New London, in Rusk County, Texas in June of 1973.

I interviewed the witness on 24 April 2002. She stated that she was 15 years old at the time of the incident. She remembered that the temperature was comfortable and the time of the day was between 5:00 and 6:00 PM before dusk.

The witness and seven of her cousins were walking behind her uncle?s house in the woods that were adjacent to her uncle?s pasture. In the woods, it was considerably darker since the vegetation was very thick; much of the sunlight was blocked. The witness told of how the group had stopped for a rest, and at that time they heard a noise behind them. When they looked, they saw a large hair-covered figure that the witness estimated to be eight feet tall. The color of the hair was described as reddish-brown and its length was estimated to be five to six inches. The witness recalled that she and her cousins were likely only 20 - 30 feet from the subject.

The frightened cousins immediately started screaming and ran back to their uncle?s house. The witness recalled looking behind her to see the subject pursuing them. At the point where the woods met the pasture, the subject broke off the pursuit and returned to the security of the woods.

The witness remembered, ?We were scared to death.? After hearing their story, their parents told them they had seen a bear. While the teenagers were certain they had not seen a bear, they never went back to look for evidence.

In 1991 or 1992, the witness was party to another incident. The witness was staying with her sister when they heard loud, low screams outside the home (near Kilgore). The witness described the vocalizations as ?Terrifying.? The sister called her ex-husband on the phone, who reportedly could hear the loud vocalizations even over the phone. The ex-husband arrived in 10 minutes. After the ex-husband arrived, the Rush County Sheriff?s office was called to the scene. The witness remembered that the deputy seemingly did not want to investigate the incident. The witness remembered that the deputy tried to tell them that they had heard a panther or some other large cat.
