Report Details

Occurrence date: August/1979
Location: Titus County, TX
Nearby/Vicinity: Mt. Pleasant
Time / Conditions: Late evening around 5:30-6:00 — Open field where I first saw it, becoming wooded. Several hay fields, a few watermelon and pea patches within a couple of miles.
# of Witnesses: 1

Witness Account:
I was out in our back yard when I was 9 years old playing on a rope swing. I heard a loud grunting sound like a large animal running. I turned and looked across the road. There was a very large, dark, furry creature running through the neighbor?s pasture towards our land (on our side of the road there were several hundred acres of wooded land that ran up to Lake Tankersley). As the creature reached the barbed wire fence it just sort of stepped over and never missed a beat, it continued across the road about 40 yards north of me and entered the woods. I could clearly hear branches being broken and the continued huffing as it ran through the woods. Needless to say it scared the living hell out of me and I made a bee line for the house. After that you couldn't get me farther than a hundred feet from the house at dusk. I did go into the woods the next day and there were quite a lot of freshly broken branches along a line that matched the creature?s path as best as I could tell.

Physical evidence:
The only evidence I can remember is the broken limbs...

Additional observations:
Very large, perhaps 6 to 6.5 feet tall( best estimate I can make from what I remember), covered in dark, thick fur( yes it was evening and I was away from it but I can still picture the fur flying in the wind as it was running, not something you forget). Definitely running on two legs.

Investigator's Observations

Investigator(s): Craig Woolheater

This investigation was conducted as a result of an incident that allegedly occurred in Titus County, Texas in August of 1979.

I interviewed the witness 8 October 2001; he did not deviate from his original report submission. He recalled having a good view of the subject, approximately 50 yards away. The witness described the subject as ?running as fast as an Olympic sprinter through the field.? It crossed the road and apparently cleared the four strand barbed wire fence with very little or no effort. The witness watched as the subject then disappeared into the woods.

The witness described the subject as being approximately six to six and one-half feet tall and possibly dark brown or black in color. The witness remembered that the sighting lasted perhaps 30 - 35 seconds.

The witness remarked that while the subject was running that it made a loud breathing sound that reminded him of sounds from a charging bull. The witness also distinctly remembered the noise made when the subject entered and crashed through the woods.

The witness remembered that the next day, he noticed tree limb breaks in the woods. The witness did not remember finding footprints.
